Keith Sonnier

Thomas Pynchon, Mason & Dixon. Dt.v.N.Stingl. Hamburg, Rowohlt, 1999.

Das Werk von Keith Sonnier (geb.1941 in Mamou, Louisiana, USA; lebt gelegentlich in New York), der in den 60er-Jahren mit Bruce Nauman, Eva Hesse, Richard Tuttle, Richard Serra, Barry LeVa zu den Wegbereitern einer sogenannten Neuen Skulptur zählt, ist vielschichtig.
Donald Kuspit schreibt in seinem Essay zu Keith Sonnier mit dem erhellenden Titel Pictographs of an Outsider : "Keith Sonnier has not made sculpture out of mud, but he has made it out of bamboo, neon, aluminium, cast paper and wood" und bezieht sich dabei auf ein Interview von Keith Sonnier aus dem Jahr 1982:
'A lot of the reason that art is so boring is that you can read it and get it in a second, then you don't want it any more. It can't sustain anything. I remember reading African myths in which a sculpture was made out of mud for some ritual and then melted away. To me, that was the best use for art - you just used it to death, it melted, and then the culture had to recreate something else. In India, too, the sculpture is altered and repainted to have a totally different look; it has nothing to do with a fexed state. That's the antithesis of iconography in the West. I like art that can be used.'
