Galerie Hubert Winter

1971

Galerie Hubert Winter opened on February 28, 1971, in the premises of a former dairy shop at Seilergasse 19 in Vienna's 1st district.

The initial program was focused on Surrealism and rare publications
from the 1920s.

In the 1970s, exhibitions were held featuring Arnulf Rainer, Heinz Frank, Picabia, Panamarenko, surrealist drawings and photography, Henri Michaux, Pierre Klossowski, Antonin Artaud, Josef Sima, and others.

1971

1974

Since 1974, establishment of an art bookstore and an antiquarian art bookshop specializing in surrealism.

Since 1979, continuous exhibition activity beginning with the first exhibition by Kowanz/Graf.

1982

From 1982 rental of the premises at
Sonnenfelsgasse 8 / Bäckerstraße 7, Vienna 1010.

In the 1980s the program opened to a contemporary discussion and artists mostly from the USA joined the gallery, for example Richard Tuttle, Lawrence Weiner, Haim Steinbach, Marcia Hafif, Mary Ellen Carroll, Richard Nonas and Fred Sandback. From 1983 until 1985 a branch in Düsseldorf was founded and from 1995 until 1999 the gallery joined the euphoric mood of Berlin.

1999

1999 move to premises at Breite Gasse 17, Vienna 1070.

Since the last decade the gallery has focused on overseen female artists and managing the Estate of Birgit Jürgenssen. Additionally younger artists with a strong unique oeuvre were constantly added to the portfolio.
